Klacko Design: Public Bench Design

Klacko has been awarded the design contract to design the Park Benches for this Project;

A Burlington park is undergoing a massive renewal project this year, and it officially started in June.

According to the city’s website, a number of exciting improvements are coming to Tansley Woods Park. A few of these improvements a new playground with rubber safety surface and accessible seating areas, three pickleball courts, a full court basketball court, and a new LED pathway and parking lot lighting.

This project will be completed in two phases and, as mentioned, the first phased kicked off last month.

The first phase, according to the city’s website, will consist of adding a new playground with a rubber safety surface and accessible shaded seating areas, sports field features including accessible spectator areas with permanent bleachers, accessible players benches, new goals posts, and soccer field backstops, accessible paved paths throughout the park, a new LED pathway and parking lot lighting, a full court basketball court, three pickleball courts, and new park furnishings.

Phase two is expected to commence in September and will consist of the resurfacing the woodlot trail with asphalt.

Both phases are expected to be completed by November of this year, and as noted on the city’s website, most of the park will be closed during construction, and Tansley Woodlot will be closed from September through November.

However, the baseball diamond and parking lot at the park will be open until the end of August.

In addition, there will be no access to or from Tansley Woods Community Centre through the park.

Public Art Benches-Tansley Woods Park, Burlington, ONBurlington Public ArtTansley Woods Park is vibrant community park that in the summer and fall of 2019 will undergo a major renewal. As part of that renewal, the City of Burlington invited professional artists to submit park bench design proposals for a series of benches that will be installed in Tansley Woods Park (4100 Kilmer Dr, Burlington, ON). Artists were asked to submit a proposal for three (3) designs that will be used to produce custom laser cut panels that will be installed in the backrest of the benches. In collaboration with my talented engineer and fabricator husband Doug, our tree concept was selected as the winning design. Photo mock-up of bench design created using photoshop.
Design RationaleThe bench design is about our relationship with trees, celebrating and educating others about old growth forests found in the surrounding escarpment. Trees are essential for all life forms: providing necessary food, shelter from the elements, removing the excess carbon from the air and supplying products. Too many trees have been removed to accommodate the massive construction boom. We need to plant more trees, replace the ones that have been ripped from the soil and save the ones that are still standing. Old growth forests cannot be replaced and are essential for our survival. Our proposed design celebrates the old growth trees by illustrating their character in three distinct ways. With the benches being in close proximity to the play structure, the proposed designs can serve as educational tools to start a conversation with young children about the importance of trees.©Kim Collins
